Overview

Everyday, contracts are being drafted and used by everyone in their daily work and lives. Yet, their legal consequences are rarely well understood by individuals which may give rise to unnecessary and often costly disputes. 

This workshop aims to enable non-legal participants to :

- gain a better understanding of fundamental contract law principles and recognise when a contract is formed and binding
- interpret the terms of a contract and understanding your legal obligations
- recognise when a contract may be terminated due to the parties' conduct or operation of law
- understand the various mechanisms for resolving a contractual dispute
- learn how to deal with the potential pitfalls and risks when dealing with contracts

Learning Objectives


This workshop focuses on understanding and evaluating contractual principles which will be critical throughout the life cycle of a contract - from formation up to termination. Not only will the participants be able to better understand the underlying principles governing a contract, they will learn how these principles relate to their everyday lives. Common myths which may lead to commercial disputes will also be addressed and dispelled. Real life cases and scenarios will also be shared and discussed to allow participants to better understand complex commercial issues faced by businesses today.

Kala Anandarajah
Head of Competition & Antitrust and Trade
Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP

Anandarajah heads the Competition & Antitrust and Trade Practice, leads the Corporate Governance Practice and is a member of the Sustainability Practice. Always a forerunner in niche areas of the law, practices in Competition (merger control, cartels etc), and Consumer Protection, she also has strong practices in employment, EHS/ESG and Telco/Media laws.

Alvin Tan holds a Bachelor of Business Management and a Juris Doctor in Law. Prior To practising law, Alvin worked as a civil servant in a central ministry. Alvin advises regularly on competition and consumer protection matters, including compliance and training. On trade, he advises regularly on issues such as licensing, import / export controls including but not limited to strategic and controlled goods. He has assisted clients on a wide range of corporate commercial matters as well as on personal law.

He also advises on employment law, termination matters, redundancy, incentive schemes, employment contracts, issues / policies on conduct and whistle-blowing. He also advises extensively on environmental compliance issues in Singapore.



Phang Hwee Guang

Phang Hwee Guang is a key member of the Practice and advises clients on various aspects of Competition law including advisory, distributorships, compliance, merger filings as well as assisting them in investigations.

On the trade front, Hwee Guang assists clients in compliance with trade regulatory matters such as import / export of goods, strategic goods control, hazardous goods, licensing and permit requirements as well as advice on free trade agreements. He also advises companies on employment issues including hiring practices, unfair dismissal, misconduct, termination and retrenchment. He has also guided employers through mediation and claims under the Employment Claims Act and investigations by the Ministry of Manpower and CPF Board.
