Africa’s economies have been impacted by a number of major factors in the global economy. Major African economies such as Nigeria and Angola have had their economies slow down into recessions. However, others have experienced good growth, in spite of these global factors. In spite of this growth, we still see a number of African countries facing severe challenges in the field of economics, urbanisation, crime and corruption, education, political instability, population growth, etc. These are challenges that must be addressed for African countries to achieve their full potential and to entice foreign investors. The question we need is to ask is how do these African countries need to respond?

Well-known author Dr Greg Mills is a co-author of the book, Making Africa Work. His co-authors are Dr Jeffrey Herbst and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. Their book, Making Africa Work, attempts to address these challenges.

Attendees can expect to learn about the following:

• Whether Africa’s doubling of its population over the next generation presents a demographic disaster or dividend, depends primarily on the policy response of African states.
• A range of options exist to diversify African economies away from raw commodities, learning from the experiences of others.
• Most Africans will, within the next fifteen years, live in cities. Whether this provides fresh economies of scale, depends on how the continent ensures both density and connectivity.
• Africa can put in place various measures to attract a greater share of the store of global FDI. 
•  Finally, the book looks at how African governments and their external partners can work together to better plan and focus development initiatives.
