Business Mission to Qatar and Jordan

The Singapore Business Federation’s Middle East Business Group (MEBG), together with International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, is organising a Business Mission to the State of Qatar and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 15 - 20 April 2018 (inclusive of flight times).

The mission will visit Qatar’s capital and largest city, Doha, from 15 – 17 April, in conjunction with a high-level visit. It will be SBF’s 8th visit there, and serves as a follow-up from the Emir’s visit to Singapore in October 2017.

This will be followed by Amman, Jordan’s capital and most populous city, as well as its country’s economic, political and cultural centre, from 17 – 19 April. It will be the Federation’s 3rd visit to Jordan, and will also include a Republic of Iraq component (in Jordan), given Jordan’s role in facilitating trade and investments for reconstruction efforts that are underway.

The following sector-specific tracks are being arranged. Other tracks may also be included, depending on the eventual confirmed delegation composition / relevance:

  • Track 1: Oil & Gas / Petrochemicals

    • Qatar: Ministry of Energy & Industry, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Petrochemical Company, ABM Qatar, Qatar Fuel (WOQOD), Qatargas, RasGas etc

    • Jordan: Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, National Petroleum Company, Manaseer Oil & Gas, Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company etc

  • Track 2: Shipping, Ports and Logistics

    • Qatar: Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar Ports Management Company (MWANI Qatar), Qatar Navigation (Milaha), Qatar Logistics, Qatar Warehousing Company, Manateq etc

    • Jordan: Ministry of Transport, Jordan Maritime Authority, Aqaba Container Terminal, Kawar Group of Companies etc

  • Track 3: Infrastructure / Utilities / Construction / Real Estate / Hospitality

    • Qatar: Qatari Diar, Qatar Building Company, Qatar Primary Materials Company, Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Qatar Real Estate Investment Company (Alaqaria), Lusail Real Estate Development Company, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) etc

    • Jordan: Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Jordan Industrial Estates Company, Eastern Hotels and Resorts Company, Reef Jarash Company, Abdali Boulevard Company, Arab International Hotels Company, Union Land Development Corporation, Ayla Oasis Development Company etc

  • Track 4: Food (agriculture and agribusiness, aquaculture, FMCG, technology, halal food products etc)

    • Qatar: Ministry of Economy and Commerce – Supplies Department, General Authority of Customs, Hassad Food, Abu Issa Holdings, Lulu Hypermarket, Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology etc

    • Jordan: Jordan Foods, Injaz Supply and Distribution Company, Allayan Group etc

  • Track 5: ICT and Fintech

    • Qatar: Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar Central Bank, Qatar Business Incubation Centre etc

    • Jordan: TBC

       

      Mission Programme Highlights

      The objectives of this mission are for participants to gain a first-hand understanding of the market dynamics and emerging sectors, and establish useful business and official contacts through our network of associations and chambers, investment promotion agencies and professional services.

       

      This includes:

  • Briefings on the countries’ latest developments in the wider regional context, investment and business opportunities, tax and legal systems

  • Meetings and site visits with various local conglomerates and government ministries

    • Qatar: Al Sulaiman Group, Taleb Group, Al Jaber Group, ABJ Group, Al Mana Group etc

    • Jordan: Abujaber Investments, Al Mahmoudia Holdings, Kawar Group, Manaseer Group etc  

  • Business matching and networking with members of the respective local business communities, as well as representatives of the chambers and associations, government ministries, key conglomerates and Singapore companies there

  • Singapore roadshows, which will be coupled with networking sessions with the local business community

  • Briefings on the developments and opportunities in Iraq, and networking session with Iraqi businessmen and government officials (to take place in Jordan)

Key Facts about Jordan

  • The upper middle income country’s GDP has averaged 2.5% over the last few years, largely attributed to the decrease in tourism due to regional turmoil, collapse of trade with Iraq and Syria etc

     

  • The predominantly Muslim country has a population of some 10.25 million, and among the highest proportion of skilled and educated workers in the region

     

  • It is well-established as an outsourcing destination - many of the world’s major IT companies have a presence there to serve the wider region

     

  • Jordan has FTAs with the US, Canada, EU, Turkey etc, as well as Singapore, which provides for almost 100% tariff removal for Singapore exports to Jordan

     

  • Opportunities lie in infrastructure (including water), construction, mining, ICT, renewable energy, financial services, tourism, real estate and general trade
