The World Bank has reported Pakistan’s GDP growth in 2018 to climb to 5.8 percent, attaining a pace its economy had before crisis hit in 2008. Pakistan’s economy is the 24th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), and boosts the world’s 6th largest population of some 207 million.

Strategically located at the crossroads of China, South Asia, Middle East & North Africa and Central Asia, Pakistan is touted as one of the Next Eleven, the 11 countries identified as having a high potential of being among the world’s largest economies in the 21st century.

With its improved credit rating and a huge boost from the US$46 billion China – Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, confidence in Pakistan’s economy has grown multifold. CPEC, a 2,400km trade corridor between Kashghar and Gwadar, will bring about opportunities in infrastructure, power and transport / logistics development, and is intended to connect China with the Middle East and Central Asia. PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts Pakistan’s GDP will reach US$4.2 trillion by 2050, up from its current US$988 billion.

Some of the key opportunities lie in the sectors of agriculture (includes value-added products, food processing and Halal food); leather and textiles; oil and gas; mining (includes coal, gold, coal and precious stones); energy; construction and infrastructure; ports and logistics etc.

SBF will be organising a business mission to Pakistan, which will take place in 24 February – 3 March 2019.
